Canyon Rim

“Keep your face to the sun and you will never see the shadows.”
Helen Keller

I had a short period of time between morning Mass at Immaculate Mary, and teaching at my elementary school job.

Which I love.

I love the kids. I love music. I love the school. I love my teacher friends. I love it.

But I had to get out.

I decided an easy, short run along the rim trail in Colorado National Monument was just the ticket. The only problem was: Matt had our pass.

So I talked the ranger at the booth into letting me in anyway.

I loved this run. So beautiful. So fun. I even took some time to lay on a boulder and enjoy the view.

Worth it.

Fence Line

“Don’t sit on the fence; break it and move out! Don’t be confined to the little things you do; the sky should be below your limit!”
Israelmore Ayivor, The Great Hand Book of Quotes

So I’m training for a half trail marathon.

So I’ma gonna be trail running.

A lot.

You can follow my training by following me on Strava. CLICK HERE.

So this morning I ran the Fence Line trail from the Wildwood TH toward White Rocks.

I didn’t make it before I ran out of time, but I had a lovely time in the golden light of sunrise whilst enjoying an episode of Gastropod.

Discovering the Monument

“Not marble nor the gilded monuments
Of princes, shall outlive this powerful rhyme,
But you shall shine more bright in these contents
Than unswept stone, besmeared with sluttish time.
When wasteful war shall statues overturn
And broils roots out the work of masonry,
Nor mars his sword nor war’s quick fire shall burn
The living record of your memory.
‘Gainst death and all-oblivious enmity
Shall you pace forth; your praise shall still find room
Even in the eyes of all posterity
That wear this world out to the ending doom.
So, till judgement that yourself arise,
You in this, and dwell in lovers eyes.”
William Shakespeare, Shakespeare’s Sonnets

I know it’s not the New Year, precisely, but I just can’t wait!

For months now we’ve been thinking about how to give ourselves a challenge like unto the one that initiated this blog… and about October we decided:

We’re going to hike and explore every trail in the Colorado National Monument in 2017.

I know it doesn’t seem like much, especially if you live in the Grand Valley or ever look at the official map that the CNM hands you at the entrance booth.

There aren’t a lot of miles of designated, maintained trail.

And yet, it’s a place we both love so much! I absolutely adore No Thoroughfare canyon, and Matt grew up here and loves it nearly as much as I do…I mean, he had his first/practice wedding on the rim of Wedding Canyon for heaven’s sake!

As much as we have explored the canyons and crevasses the Monument offers, we don’t feel that we have seen even a fraction of what mysteries are held within the enigmatic canyon walls of the Heart of the World.

[Side note… Matt and I both got to be spotlighted in the filming of ‘The Heart of the World’ documentary, riding our bikes on Rim Rock Road…].

I do hope that you will join us on our journey as we explore this highly under-rated National Park Service property. Just look over to the right of your screen and enter your email address to be notified of every upcoming post…written by me and photos by Matt Janson Photography.

Look familiar? Yeah it should! This is Matt’s photo of Independence Monument that was featured on the cover of the Grand Junction City calendar for 2014. Expect more of this awesomeness to come.
