Homemade Crit

“The most authentic thing about us is our capacity to create, to overcome, to endure, to transform, to love and to be greater than our suffering.” — Ben Okri

So it’s been snowy out. Not a problem if it’s also frozen, or packed-in. Can totally still be rideable. But when it’s 45 and raining? There is no snow, no ice, and no dirt. There’s mush, slush, and mud. No happy place for a Trail Maven like myself.

I happen to have this race coming up in a few days. I happen to be feeling less-than-prepared for it. I happen to be able to be creative in a pinch. I happen to have some paved trails in my neighborhood. I happen to be okay with riding the same route over and over and over.

Thus it was I generated my own sort-of criterion route around my neighborhood. Though I experimented at first, I ended up doing a route that took me down the paved path on Rana, right and climbing up Ridge Circle, connecting to the path again, then past the park, another right and up the road to School Ridge, then up to Hill View, down that, Ridge Circle, back to Rana. Here’s the map.

It was cold. It was wet. But I moved fast (for the conditions) and had the tunes pumping. When I finished, I took off the wet things, put on my bathing suit, and hit the hot tub at the gym. Not a bad way to start the day, actually.

Sorry. I did not stop for pictures. Not even a selfie.
